Fifth and Sixth Grade Science
I feel very fortunate to be able to teach science to the fifth and sixth graders at Ed-Co. Learning basic knowledge about science topics, enriching that knowledge through hands-on experiments and activities, and applying what we learn in the classroom to the real world are the basic goals of our science program. We take every opportunity to practice scientific inquiry and the scientific method. In addition, keeping up on current events in science is interesting and a great way to see science happening every day in the world around us.
An exciting, new, and research-based approach to learning science will be used this year. Students will be thinking critically and will be very engaged in their learning. This method of learning is the Science Writing Heuristic. The process involves studying big ideas in science. Students will access their prior knowledge and form questions about the big ideas. These questions will be researched and tested with experiments the students design themselves. Students will research, write, and experiment their way to a clear understanding of our big ideas in science.
